Practice
Charcoal
September, 2010

Experimenting with charcoal, blending, the whole nine yards. I've spent so much time with precision and graphite, that having something more instantaneous, with better values, to boot, is a welcome break. Trying to work from sight, not go to the grid so to speak. I have to get back to a few pieces on the desk, but this was a great diversion.

I'm really pleased with the way that this one came out. I think that the style and medium lend themselves to moodier pieces, without so much precise detail (such as matched eyes, clothing, etc). I used the shot "Dont Bring Me Down" [link] by *OhToast as a reference; I've loved her shot for ages and ages, and even had it as a desktop for a while =) Its one of those that you keep around hoping to get to it one day, but never quite do. Until you do lol!

I really love the face and hair. It has so much emotion and feeling in it. The only thing that bugs me is her shoulder. It looks unfinished to me. But everything else is wonderful! Good work!

WOW. This is amazing, I don't get it how people do so well with charcoal, I gave up on it a long time ago, its just much too hard and dirty for me. I think charcoal looks a lot nicer though, the thing is though its either charcoal or pencil because mixing media in that case is impossible which is ironic since pencil and charcoal are very much alike.

I used to feel the same way, and I'd ignored it for years and years. I just recently came at it again, and with dome different techniques, and its turning out quite nicely =)

Charcoal? Good for you! This is great. I know exactly what you mean. I need to do something like this. But how much "controll" will I really be able to let go of? We shall see....one of these days.
