For a few months now, my dad and his buddy have been experimenting with sandblasting on various surfaces; they started out with just text and clipart, but they’ve been working into some pretty complex artwork, as well. Back in January, we put this same image onto a 4’x6’ piece of two-way glass/mirror [link] and it turned out freakin’ sweet, though we (and I mean he) hasn’t been able to get a good photograph of it that doesn’t include either background or reflection. This granite piece is slightly smaller, but still takes up the bed of a pickup truck and takes several guys to manhandle around! I’m pretty stoked about it.
There are a number of other pieces we’ve done in collaboration between the three of us; I’m waiting on photos (well, photos without camera flash) of a granite version of “He Sees Me”, though there are plans to put that and a few other drawings onto a rough-hewn Kasota stone (yellow/tan sandstone, unpolished) and then backpaint it with black. There was also, for a short period, a six or seven foot tall version of “He Is Risen” on tempered glass, but apparently that was shattered into a million tiny pieces at some point, before anybody managed to get a decent photograph. That drawing was originally intended to be blasted into glass, albeit a somewhat sturdier piece
If this is something that interests you, they’re actively seeking commissions; they’re in southern Minnesota, and you can look them up at www.stainedglassstudiostpeter.com or give a call to 507-931-3818. They usually handle the business end of things, then send out to me for the artwork, which they’ll then translate into the real-world piece of glass or stone. There are really a lot of options and avenues here, it’s an exciting time!
This piece is based off of my drawing here [link] of Jessica Truscott, of `faestock please, please, go visit her page, she’s absolutely wonderful!
