Kairit
Numbered Pencils & Graphite stick on Bristol
2 March 2009

The two main goals on this picture were A) to get a better depth of tone and value, ie blacker blacks, darker darks, etc, and B) use erasers. Many people use erasers to lift out highlights and reflections, but I've never really done that, always opting to simply leave an area unshaded. So I wanted to get a feel for erasing out details. Thats on top of the new use of blending versus simple crosshatching. Let me know what you think!

Subject is Kairit-- came across her online a few years ago, she's a photographer, mostly, and I'm a big fan of her self portrait serries' you can find her stuff at [link] this is based off of her "Getting Your Attention"..... I think that she succeeded!!

all comments, criticism, fav's, input, lottery numbers etc appreciated!

Great, I love this! Her hair is just perfect. Her eye and the flowers are beautiful! The shading or tones on her face are excellent. My only question would be about her lips, especially her lower lip. Something doesn't look right, but her lips may be like that. This is just great!! :iconjoyloveplz:

Interesting, what do you think of blending versus crosshatching?

I think it really depends on the message you're trying to convey and the language you're using to convey it. Often, I'm going for things like beauty, ellegance, tranquility, and the like, where smoothness and blending are key. However, when the point is movement, or speed, or disquiet/disharmony, a rougher choppier stroke and line become usefull. My personal inclination is usually to blending, but for quick ideas and field sketches Ill use crosshatching as well :)

You do extraordinary work.
I don't run into too many artists who forego blending here
for realistic drawing so I was curious since you mentioned it.

Oh my, what kind of eraser did you use to make the hair so realistic? I've got huge problems with that, my highlights are never thin enough, if you know what I mean.

if I remember correctly it was a hard rubber eraser, white. The thing was, I kept having to sharpen it. I'd do a few strokes/strands, and then switch to another edge. Once or twice I could wipe of the graphite from my finger, but after that I used a knife to put a new ege on. I only sliced off the thinnest of pieces, maybe half of a millimeter, just enough to give me a fresh crisp edge. Now, I've got a clickable eraser, kind of like a mechanical pencil, that I do the same thing with. For most things I use a kneaded soft gummy eraser, and that works okay with soft charcoals, but for dark graphites I used the hardest one I could find =)

of course, no problem! =) yeah, I dont think its super important which specific one you use, so long as its hard and sharp. a keen edge is the key!

Northern Sweeden? is that Lapps, or was that Finland? hehe, I'm imagining you with a "Yooper" accent/dialect =D (yooper=upper michigan, pretty distinct hehe)

Yeah, just bought myself an expensive rubber almost as hard as a rock, and wow, what a difference! Rubbers is your best friend in more than one way ;P

It's Lappland actually, I've never been to Finland. I've heard some of the yooper accent, and though it isn't exactly how I sound, it's pretty close though. I sound almost like this: [link] sorry about the low quality ^^;

lol, rubber can be very friendly, though bendy can be good too ;-)

haha, I can't understand a word he's saying, but I'm pretty sure I've heard him before, or at the very least, I've heard the inflection and accents in English. The best I can come up with in reply is: [link] ALSO of terrible quality. Still, fun!
