Lúthien Tinuviel Bordered
Graphite,15x21" inside mixed media matting
December 2013

So, it's only taken seven months of this  www.avogel57.deviantart.com/ar… sitting on my couch, but I've finally finished the framing and matting for this drawing =)  When I started this, I was right around the Beren and Luthien portion of the Tolkien Professor's Silmarillion seminar. As she's the most beautiful of all the Children of Iluvatar, I've been wanting to do something with Jess of `faestock as Luthien =)

The script around the border is the Tengwar [font] transcription of the Elvish translation of part of the tale of Beren and Luthien, and reads as follows:

Now as has been told the power of Elwë and Melian increased in Middle-Earth, and all the Elves of Beleriand, from the mariners of Cirdan to the wandering hunters of the Blue Mountains beyond the River Gelion, owned Elwë as their lord; Elu Thingol he was called, King Greymantle, in the tongue of his people. They are called the Sindar, the Grey-elves of starlit Beleriand; and although they were Moriquendi, under the lordship of Thingol and the teaching of Melian they became the fairest and the most wise and skilful of all Elves of Middle-earth. And at the end of the first age of the Chaining of Melkor, when all the Earth had peace and the glory of Valinor was at its noon, there came into the world Lúthien, the only child of Thingol and Melian. Though Middle-earth lay for the most part in the sleep of Yavanna, in Beleriand under the power of Melian there was life and joy, and the bright stars shone as silver fires; and there in the forest of Neldoreth Lúthien was born, and the white flowers of niphredil came forth to greet her as starsrom the earth.

...But wandering in the summer in the woods of Neldoreth he [Beren one-hand] came upon Lúthien, daughter of Thingol and Melian, at a time of evening under moonrise, as she danced upon the unfading grass in the glades beside Esgalduin. Then all memory of his pain departed from him, and he fell into an enchantment; for Lúthien was the most beautiful of all the Children of Ilúvatar. Blue was her raiment as the unclouded heaven, but her eyes were grey as the starlit evening; her mantle was sewn with golden flowers, but her hair was dark as the shadows of twilight. As the light upon the leaves of trees, as the voice of clear waters, as the stars above the mists of the world, such was her glory and her loveliness; and in her face was a shining light.

[Chapter 10, Of the Sindar, pg91]
[Chapter 19, Of Beren and Lúthien, pg165]

For those of you wondering, this comes from Tolkein's "Silmarillion", the tales of the Ilúvatar, the One, and the Ainur (powers); the awakening of the Elves and the First Age of Middle-Earth. Elwë, also known as Elu Thingol, was one of the first elves to awaken next to the shores of Cuiviénen avogel57.deviantart.com/art/Wo… and was summoned as one of three ambassadors into the west to Valinor by Oromë the Hunter. He later became enchanted by Melian the Maia, who was, ere the Music, and the making of the world, and who wandered long in the gardens of Lórien in Valinor before coming to Middle-earth.

Gorgeous portrait. I love the detail you drew into her, the shading, and blending. Her dress shines like satin. Fantastic job! Thanks for sharing.

Holy cow, that's beautiful! I always loved the story of Beren and Luthien, and this is one of the coolest interpretations of Luthien I've ever seen. Amazing work!
